When <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iablueprint.com\/blog\/youre-the-leader-but-everything-still-depends-on-you\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everything depends on you<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it can be tough to break away from those daily demands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when we\u2019re working in our zone of genius, we\u2019re thriving. We\u2019re achieving our highest potential. When we\u2019re not, that creates friction \u2014 which spills over into our zone of genius. We end up doing strategic thinking and planning on nights or weekends, when we\u2019re exhausted \u2014 if it gets done at all. Our energy drains, we feel resentful of having to work those long hours, and we move closer to burnout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s dive into this concept in more depth. Then, we\u2019ll explore how to identify your zone of genius \u2014 and how to spend much more time in it within your daily work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Is the Zone of Genius?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gay Hendricks introduces the concept of the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejoyofbusiness.co.uk\/how\/how-to-find-your-zone-of-genius\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zone of genius<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in his book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Big Leap<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Basically, throughout the day, we might work in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/briannawiest\/2018\/09\/26\/how-to-get-into-the-zone-of-genius-and-unlock-your-highest-potential\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four different areas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Our zone of incompetence. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the tasks that don\u2019t use our talents, that bore us, and that take more time than they should.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Our zone of competence.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These are the things that we\u2019re decent at doing, but that don\u2019t use our skills or truly interest us.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Our zone of excellence. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the activities that we\u2019re really good at and enjoy doing. However, they\u2019re not the main thing that drives us, and if we focus on them too much, we won\u2019t feel fulfilled.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Our zone of genius. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the things we feel most passionate about doing, and the things that fully leverage our core skills.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the difference between working in your zone of excellence vs. zone of genius? In your zone of genius, your skills and passions merge. When you\u2019re operating in your zone of genius, you\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iablueprint.com\/blog\/leadership-means-doing-more-not-less\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doing your highest-impact work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You\u2019re bringing your most brilliant and creative ideas to the table. You\u2019re fully immersed in what you\u2019re doing. You\u2019re in a state of \u201cflow\u201d that no longer truly feels like work. In your zone of excellence, you may feel good about what you\u2019re doing, but you\u2019re not as excited or energized by it.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a leader, you need to expand the time you spend working in your zone of genius. In fact, you probably need to increase it dramatically. Most of us spend much of our day in our zone of competence or excellence. We even handle tasks that bring us into our zone of incompetence, simply because someone needs to do them. Meanwhile, we don\u2019t carve out much space for the things that fall into our zone of genius.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that\u2019s the place where our ingenuity takes shape and where we create the most value for our business. When you inhabit your zone of genius, you\u2019re coming up with creative solutions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/report.woodard.com\/articles\/are-you-working-in-your-genius-zone-opdwr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re innovating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in ways that move the company forward, and you\u2019re pushing your own boundaries. Then, you can focus on leveraging this strength in your daily work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Distinguishing Genius from Excellence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People often get trapped in their zone of excellence. Here, the work you\u2019re doing comes naturally. You\u2019re good at it. You receive frequent praise for your efforts. But something is missing. When you\u2019re in your zone of excellence vs. your zone of genius, it still <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feels like work <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 not play. You don\u2019t have as much passion for what you\u2019re doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For me, working in my zone of genius means focusing on shaping our messaging in ways that speak to our values. It means acting as the face of the company, building our credibility and presence in our industry. It also means growing relationships with key clients, fostering a strong culture, and coaching the team to success. If I focused mainly on sales, I\u2019d be in my zone of excellence, but I\u2019d be missing the chance to leverage my strategic thinking and leadership skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you step into your zone of genius, you\u2019ll <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iablueprint.com\/blog\/how-i-stopped-being-the-bottleneck\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stop being the bottleneck<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to your own success \u2014 and you\u2019ll start truly thriving. Let\u2019s turn to how to make that shift now.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Spend More Time in Your Zone of Genius<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more time you carve out for your zone of genius, the easier it will be to ramp up the percentage of time you spend there in the future. In your zone of genius, you\u2019ll be designing and implementing ideas that enhance your company\u2019s success. For each task that falls into the left two quadrants of the matrix, ask yourself these questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIs it growing the business?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDoes it truly require my unique skill set?\u201d<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you answered \u201cno\u201d to both questions, strive to offload the task. Begin with the ones in the bottom left quadrant. Once you\u2019ve emptied out that one, move to the top left and offload those. It does take time; don\u2019t feel like you\u2019re doing something wrong if you\u2019re not focused on your zone of genius the very first week after doing this. Over time, the bucket of daily tasks that fall outside of your zone of genius will get smaller as you take the following steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a \u201cZone of Genius\u201d Map<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Map out the types of activities that fit into your area of genius. When you\u2019re using this strength, what are you doing? Try <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindmapping.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creating a mind map<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to illustrate the different strengths and passions you draw upon each day, showing how they\u2019re linked. You can do this by hand or use an online tool. This can serve as a quick visual reference that helps you prioritize.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center Your \u201cGenius Zone\u201d Activities in Your Schedule<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Block out time for your zone of genius activities. Choose the times when you\u2019ll give your best energy to those tasks. Then, plan everything else around them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hire an Executive Assistant<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is my number-one tip for how to fully step into your zone of genius. An executive assistant will protect your time and handle the tedious tasks that were derailing your focus from what matters most. Use the Leadership Delegation Focus Matrix with them, pinpointing which activities use their highest strengths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask these questions to start defining their zone of genius:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which of their daily activities have the greatest impact on the business?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What unique skills do they possess (whether they\u2019re currently using them or not)?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What tasks are they handling that truly require their uniqueness?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also share your own observations and ask them to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toastmasters.org\/magazine\/magazine-issues\/2025\/july\/leading-from-your-zone-of-genius\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take an evaluation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of their strengths, discussing the results together.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, try to refine their range of responsibilities to focus on these areas, hiring support staff to help with the others.
